SNAP-8 quick reference
What is SNAP-8?
Cosmetic peptide used in anti-wrinkle serums.
People use it to soften forehead lines and crow's feet.
No study of SNAP-8 alone in people.
How SNAP-8 works
Designed to mimic part of SNAP-25, a protein in muscle-nerve signalling.
Argireline blocked SNARE assembly and nerve-signal release in cells.
Argireline was much less potent than botulinum toxin.
What SNAP-8 is studied for
24 people: wrinkles and elasticity improved versus a plain patch.
25.8% fewer fine lines over 12 weeks; many ingredients.
60 people: 48.9% wrinkle response versus 0% on placebo.
Argireline cut neurotransmitter release in cells.
SNAP-8 dosing protocol
| Item | What is known |
|---|---|
| Human dose | Not established |
| Studied in | Skin patches and creams, always with other ingredients |
| Microneedle patch study (24 people) | Patch applied overnight to one eye area; results checked over 28 days |
| Microneedle patch study, 12 weeks | Patch on the eye corner and forearm; number of people not stated in the abstract |
Shin JY et al. Ann Dermatol 2024 and Avcil M et al. J Cosmet Dermatol 2020. Both patches held several actives, so the results cannot be credited to SNAP-8 alone.
Label and trial amounts come from the sources below. Community amounts are what people report; they have not been tested.
Mixing
Mix 10–20 mg powder into 30 mL serum base. Start low. Topical only.
What the research found
No result exists for SNAP-8 alone. Results from patches that contained it among other ingredients:
Shin JY et al. Ann Dermatol 2024 (PMID 39082657); Avcil M et al. J Cosmet Dermatol 2020 (PMID 31134751). Supplier claims of 'up to 63%' wrinkle reduction have no study, size or timeframe attached, so we do not use them.
SNAP-8 community experience
What users report. Not tested in trials.
Positive reports
- Subtle smoothing Gentle line softening, not wrinkle removal.
- Forehead and eyes Most users target forehead lines and crow's feet.
- Needs consistency Twice-daily use works better than occasional use.
Negative & mixed
- Little or no change Some see nothing after steady use.
- Not Botox Results are subtle and fade after stopping.
- Base does the work Hydrating ingredients may explain quick gains.
SNAP-8 stacking
Common DIY serum pair. Not studied together.
Same idea; likely redundant.
HA plumps the surface; SNAP-8 targets expression lines.
SNAP-8 side effects & safety
Common
- Both patch studies reported no skin safety problems.
- User reports: mild redness, warmth, stinging or itching.
- User reports: dryness or flaking.
- Irritation often comes from the whole serum, not SNAP-8 alone.
Less common
- Eye irritation if applied near the lash line.
- Hives, swelling or blistering; stop use.
- Long-term safety of SNAP-8 alone is not studied.
Precautions
- Keep off eyelids, lash line, broken or sunburned skin.
- Take care with eczema, rosacea or past contact dermatitis.
- Introduce retinoids and acids separately to spot irritation.
- Avoid in pregnancy or breastfeeding; limited data.
- Topical only; never inject skincare products.
Our verdict on SNAP-8
Mild, plausible cosmetic add-on. Evidence for SNAP-8 itself is thin.
SNAP-8 FAQ
Is SNAP-8 like Botox?
No. It is a cream ingredient with far weaker effects.
Does SNAP-8 work?
Patch studies with other ingredients showed gains. SNAP-8 alone is untested.
What is acetyl octapeptide-3?
The cosmetic name for SNAP-8, an 8-amino-acid peptide.
