How Oxytocin works

Oxytocin receptors

Contract the uterus and trigger milk ejection.

Brain receptors

Shape stress and social responses, with mixed results in trials.

Antidiuretic effect

Large IV doses hold water and can cause water intoxication.

Very short half-life

Gone from blood in 1-6 minutes.

What Oxytocin is studied for

PeopleLabor and bleeding after birth

Approved by IV drip or injection (Pitocin).

PeopleAutism in children

290 children: no gain over placebo at 24 weeks.

PeopleStress hormone

18 trials, 675 people: cortisol drop small and not significant.

PeopleLow desire in women

Women's 32 IU spray before sex did not beat placebo on partner ratings.

PeopleEye gaze and bonding

24 IU in 68 men changed nothing.

PeopleObesity

24 IU four times daily for 8 weeks left vasopressin unchanged.

What the research found

SOARS-B: 290 children and teens with autism, 24 weeks, nasal oxytocin vs placebo, target 48 IU a day. Measured: change in a social withdrawal score (lower is better):

-3.7Oxytocin group
-3.5Placebo group
-0.2Difference (95% range -1.5 to 1.0), not significant
